Random Websites

Okay, here goes, just a stream of consciousness flow of words about sites that come up from doing the wheel of fortune approach to websurfing. We will see how many duds and how many keepers are in the bunch – however big this bunch turns out to be…

Could help if I turn the Work Offline button off, that last one didn’t seem very random – DUH.

Okies, first off the block and it’s not a promising start. The domain is for sale, and it has advertising for umm penis enlargement. One of the worst kinds of ads in modern day civilization. Will NOT be using the link to enlargement central - scooting quickly to the next…

A poetry site, by the looks, with a used car salesman pitch on the front page – gets a grin out of me. Let’s have a look around, see if it is anything more than the usual weblog – wow, actually some good poems in here – sounds a very frustrated little bunny, but then again aren’t we all – looking like something that I would write actually. OK, so poetry good, let’s see what else is here… not much, is a North Carolina boy, hmm, to give feedback or not – yup I did, even though it meant opening up Yahoo mail in another window. Would take his poetry, but that would be infringement of copyright LOL. Next!

Woohoo, my first invalid site. Wait a minute, kinda invalid, the message says he’s on holiday in 2001 – I guess he didn’t reactivate the site, what a pity LOL. Onwards and upwards…

Ooh the anthrax attacks in late 2001 was it? Nobody caught or charged – hmm now where is that on the agenda anymore – nice layout looks like a conspiracy site LOL. Last updated April this year, so not really that old. I like this wording – ‘I decided it was time to assemble what little actual information that I could find on the Internet and to analyze it myself.
This was done for my own education, but I'm sharing it for others who might be interested.’ – very conspiratorial LOL. Ooh, were other envelopes destroyed? Ooh, the envelope to the NY Post was unopened weeks after it was delivered. Umm yeah, the thing with conspiratorial cheap layouts is that you get bored with it very quickly, is a long long page and I am barely an eighth of the way down (yawn). Okies, a third of the way down the page and I have to cut this short, apart from finding who is the guy that has put so much effort into this? Hmm Michigan Militia anyone? Just have to dart away to a link page – hmm he, Ed Lake, had a Time article written about him, hmm – ‘Lake, 65, a retired computer specialist, was planning to spend this year writing his seventh screenplay (sci-fi, time travel), convinced that this one would be good enough to be produced. Instead, he has become obsessed with the hunt for the anthrax killer.’ ‘Nuff said, methinks – next!

Another easy, 404 Not Found one…

Hmm an internet fan club for that Fellini guy – you know, La Dolce Vita and Italy during the 60s thing? In three languages, Italian, English and Spanish, and apparently sponsored by the Italian wing of Kodak – wow, fifty thousand access monthly, wonder how many of those are the random spinners such as myself. LOL of even less interest than a weblog actually, I don’t know him, he seems to have been an alright director, but not to the point of poring over a website about… next

Ooh, looking at the URL looks like a Hungarian site – or should that be ‘an Hungarian’. Let’s see what comes up as the page loads and if there is ANY English or whether it will be figure out the meaning from the piccies LOL. No English link that I can see, and no pictures apart from the ads – hmm a news site perhaps? Ah that’s nice to know at least, is 16 degrees today in Budapest LOL. There’s the horoscope link… ah, there’s some English links, but they are all to newspapers, and the German and Spanish papers as well, so at least we have ascertained it is a newspaper site. Eh, trying to translate from Hungarian is doing my head in, I know the weather there, sun covered with cloudy bit and the temperature, that is fine for now LOL. Next…

Yay, it’s Anglo for starters. Okay, looks like some sort of desktop design site, let’s have the oh so crucial deeper look (head still hurting from all those Zs and Hs in Hungarian LOL). The best ISP eh? Dammit I can’t do anything if I don’t register – ah well let’s re-look at the front page then… ‘LiteStep was originally written years ago by lonerunnr as a AfterStep interface port for windows.’ Umm, anyone understand that previous sentence? I am lost again LOL. ‘Join us and help the effort’ is the last line, and hmm sounds very Borgish to me. Next! Oh, not quite, I think I get it – it is a site battling against the conformity of the Windows desktop look, the Rebels or the Empire LOL – next now…

Weblog. Any good but? Let’s see. Oh, first strike against it, last entry was Dec 31 last year. Hmm, think the Retro Soviet look to the site is more than just a laugh to the author, hmm seems to be a girl. Let’s find out more LOL – bleah, that link went nowhere, she seems to be off the system. Hmm, my first aside for this journey, about listening to cosmonauts in the ‘60’s.

Has transmissions from the missions that weren’t successful, that burned up on re-entry – some Italian brothers had a listening post out for the Soviets apparently. Well, they were listening to radio waves from outer space and then found the Sovs were flying over them. Bleah, just like reading the last cellphone calls of the flights from 9-11 I guess. And this one I just read was GOING to be the first woman in space, but when it went wrong the Sovs said the satellite was unmanned. Hmm, okies, this is where it starts getting conspiracy, that the Soviets had another man up before Gagarin but that the Vostok burned up on re-entry. Hmm, not that I wouldn’t put it past them, but it’s like did the Vikings or Scots find North America first, in two hundred years time it’s gonna be Gagarin on the cereal box. Next!

Weblog. Current. Well, May 30 current anyhows. Anything interesting on here hmm. Well, currentish – four entries in four months. Somewhere in Silicon Valley, is talking about San Jose. Umm, trying to be over-descriptive – ‘Light is like distilled morning, her hair almost platinum and her skin even lighter but so far from pale you can hardly imagine.’ Indeed, man, indeed – pass the reefer dudette LOL. Thomas, twenty three, USA. Next! Well, not quite yet again – sometimes there is such beauty in the most mundane of pictures – has a set of tyres in one of the pics, all piled on top of each other, with a dull green exposure by the looks, and is beautiful. Strange, but true – next.

Oh, after talking about beautiful photos in the previous one – a photography magazine online. Kewl. Seventeen years of publication, quarterly, but has moved to another site, let’s have a look see there…

Now into it’s eighteenth year. I love art, but with my dominant logical side of me, can usually make neither head nor tail out of it. My first true girlfriend was very artsy and you never knew what she was gonna do next. Me and art in general I think – I can appreciate it, I can understand it (most of the time) but I’m not sure whether I will ever actually fully GET it. If ya know what I mean. All I know is whether I like it or not, and I like these photos. And god would I love to have the perfect life where I have the perfect coffee table and subscriptions to all these glossy non-Cleo, Cosmo or FHM magazines. There are more glossy magazines out there apart from sex tips and nudity LOL. Oh, there is a pic (‘Mike’s Bar’), black and white, people talking in a bar or more likely a coffee house, I want to be there… saved it to my PC, lol no copyright infringement there? It’s not going anywhere else…

First off, interesting title. Ah, is a review interview magazine that seems to be books and literature and stuff. More art LOL. Well, not quite, the editor’s piece this month looks like how can we exist with nature with all human technology thing. Based in California, so not much surprise there, not much you can do apart from subscribe and leave comments. Maybe look at a back issue hmm. Nice photography, paintings, I can deal with, these people just seem to be over my head with what they are talking about LOL. Next, quickly!

Weird one – ah, is Brazilian, was wondering whether the text was Spanish or Portuguese. Nothing much to the site apart from something about Linux and a quote by Albert Einstein. You are kidding, does Portuguese get a spell check on Word eek. Ah, learn a new thing every day, there is a U after the G in that word. But yeah, not a keeper website.

First off, a German site, with Laverne and Shirley wallpaper? Oops, got it wrong, Cagney and Lacey LOL. Ein weblog indeed. LOL I should get my sister to try and read this, she wants to go over to Germany next year. A German weblog, no English translation, am not going to try and work my three years of high school language training out on this I think. Next!

Well, that’s a good start, make me think there is dust on my screen, lol great attention getting wallpaper guys.  Oh, this is that band Cake. Didn’t they do that drag racing song and a couple of others, yes I am interested enough to have a look see… ‘cos he’s going the distance, he’s going for speed, she’s all alone (all alone) all alone in a time of need’ – sorry, just humming there LOL. Six concerts in the States over the next few months, nothing seeming too rushed or anything LOL. And their recommendation for film of the moment, Fog of War, yes I would like to see that one too. ‘I like the girl with the short skirt and the longggggggggg jacket’ – humming again LOL. Ooh goodie, they give you half a minute for the songs that you can download – okay, let’s start up another list, this time of songs I randomly come into contact with that I want to have as keepers – Cake, The Distance and Short Skirt/Long Jacket as first two on the list. Next – that was a goodie of a site may I just say J

Another music site, this one looks like an actual company rather than an individual band. Let’s have a look around shall we? Hmm big promotion for the one band on the front page, let’s delve deeper. LOL another member of the Axis of Evil have been found, a couple of this label’s bands have done a Rock Against Bush LP. I won’t even mention WMD, I promise LOL. Eh, these internal site links are taking forever to get up – lol it’s not Cake or REM so why am I bothering. Oh, there you go, CA based and looking for interns, hmm Washingtonienne and Monica Lewinsky LOL. Hmm, they can’t do Green Day stuff, maybe this label was Green Day’s first? Or one of the ones that was trodden over by whomever they are with now? Ah, that is it, they are one of this label’s bands, but have their own website and merchandising? Hmm, the Soviettes seem to be their biggie at the moment – let’s see if I can DL any of their music, even half a minute’s worth. Eh, laggy again, next!

Dammit, another for sale domain – thought it was another arty photography site. OMFG – ‘The quoted price will be at least $688 and may be over $10,000’ – thems is big bikkies.

I’m always kinda wary of org links – apart from the UN, they all seem to be activist sites LOL. Just Say No To Drug Reps – obviously a medical insider kinda site. Ooh attacking Celebrex and Lipitor on the very front page, I have to first figure out what they are and secondly have a look around LOL. Ooh, drug companies spend more on marketing than on research. R&D staff have gone down 2% since 1995 and marketing staff have gone up 59%. Wow, in 2000 Merck spent more marketing one of their drugs than either Pepsi or Budweiser. Scary scary, what happens on ER with the drug reps seems to be true LOL. Their mission – ‘Our quarrel is not with the pharmaceutical industry, but with pharmaceutical industry promotion. The time has come to eliminate its influence from our practices.’

Hmm, this one isn’t making much sense so far. And that would be because I have worked out that it is an arty site. And quite a confusing one. One good piccie I can see, is very much a dark blurry thing on the links page, but the rest of it is over my head. Next

Okies, is this freak time on the random spinner of webs LOL. This guy looks like he is a song writer or something, rap or some such, and he mentions he may have Ludacris working with him? From the way his site is set up, hmm has a long way before he gets in the big leagues – or maybe it’s a secondary or tertiary website. Perhaps. Not a keeper – next!

Italian site for starters. Or not, as the case may be, not a 404 Not Found, but the server in Italia crashed or something. Next.

Poets? Writers? Songwriters? Something about contributing lyrics to a book? Oh – ‘"Accordions, organs, theremins, and the occasional brass horn and homemade instrument combine to make soundscapes that are both haunting and entertaining." -The New Yorker’ – so that is what they are up to. Okies, I’m getting close to being arted out for this afternoon. My brain is hurting LOL. Next…

LOL, first look is one of those become a millionaire just by getting spam sites. Let’s look further (thank goodness it isn’t arty LOL). OMG it IS one of those sort of sites, not by reading spam but by giving your money to this guy. How the hell could he afford the domain costs LOL. Well, at least he is being honest I guess, about just wanting money. But that is the only redeeming feature of that site, ptooey LOL.

Another music label site. No, my mistake, a music review site. On punk and hardcore music – has over 26,000 song reviews apparently. Let’s test em LOL – yes there is Green Day, LOL – hmm I guess it is only US bands, there is no Sex Pistols. Okies, next…

Dutch radio station website. Let’s see if there is an English link hmm. Dammit no English link and there’s a story about an X-rated exhibition in Dutch LOL. Settle Paul, 25 sites is a good start, but now am tired, need coffee and or food – will spot you all tomorrow.
