Have just about had enough of the local terrorism story already. Head was about to explode already even over that.
Then there was an article on Lateline about 'intelligent design' and my head was about to explode even more. Yes, the planet is only six thousand years old, and Adam and Eve had the vegetarian dinosaurs cavorting around the Garden of Eden. Had one of the intelligent design backers saying he wished he could reach into scientists' brains and flick the switch so they could understand what intelligent design is all about. The reverse is equally true mate. Fifty percent of Americans believe God made us in His image. He has a lot to explain with the political leadership He has landed us with in that case :)
Hmm, the riots in France may have reached their peak now that the curfew laws are being used - only 500 cars burnt last night rather than 1400 the night before - but hmm, I don't think it will entirely stop the riots or the tension behind them. And of course these are the same laws used in 1955 Algeria, and what a success that was.
Doesn't look like it will be 1968 again though, unless the unions and students get involved - what with French public opinion as it is at the moment, very inward looking, I don't think they will link up with the underprivileged Muslims at this stage. And before the riots, Interior Minister and potential Presidential nominee Sarkozy saying that the underclass are scum to be swept from the street, sounds more like Putin talking about the Chechens, and we all know how democratic and rule of law Russia is at the moment. Grr.
Hmm, it's funny how the best opposition Britain has at the moment is the unelected House of Lords - as Tony Blair recalls Gordon Brown and Jack Straw from Israel and Russia where they were just starting diplomatic tours to try and win the vote on the 90 day extension to police powers to interrogate terror suspects without charge - or what I have decided to christen the 'Guantanamo Gap'. Tony of course having a hissy fit over maybe not getting his own way in the House of Commons for the first time since Labour became government. The Lords look even more intractable though.
Silver lining on the night though is the European Space Agency's Venus Express being sent on it's way from Baikonur in Kazakhstan. I remember the last big Russian launch, some weather satellite from memory, it blew up shortly after lift off. Mmm, space, and Venus, the evening star - 425 degrees Celcius and ninety times Earth pressure on the Venusian surface. Five months until the probe goes into orbit around the planet - I can hardly wait :)
