My usual Saturday routine, waking up and watching the music chart show on Rage. Although, with two Crazy Frog songs in the top twenty, and two, count 'em, two, Schnappi songs in the top thirty - a song about a llama in Yokohama sung in German is at 26, I don't know why I'm really bothering at the moment. And I thought a crocodile in Egypt as their first 'song' was bad enough, who is BUYING this stuff?
And don't even get me started on the 'strength' of Australian music at the moment - from the shouty girl power singing about sex (how old ARE those girls?) of the Veronicas, to the sleep inducing James Blunt, to OMG how did he ever get a record deal Shannon Noll, to the wannabe rap or dance of Rogue Traders, to same notes as James Blunt for Pete Murray. And that Idol 'failure' Joel Turner singing about Tupac Shakur - yeah, lot's of resonance in Cabramatta, Fitzroy and Mount Gravatt, Joel...
I actually don't mind Anthony Callea or Ricki Lee, when they sing GOOD songs. Wolfmother seem like they keep real to their own ideas when it comes to music, although they are a bit gravelly voiced and guitary for my liking. And of course, Ben Lee's Catch My Disease is one of the most catchy happy songs in my head lately. Migod, have just looked through the top fifty list, and for the first time ever in the last eighteen months it must be, Missy Higgins isn't in the charts LOL. I'm sure she is charting album wise though...
By the way, the Veronicas are twenty, they just look and act as if they are fourteen LOL. Their spot at the Arias last week with Axel Whitehead, another how did he make it 'celebrity', was just sickly sugary sweet. But then again, that was most of the Arias - highlights of course being Neil Finn singing Better Be Home Soon - they obviously don't make music like that anymore - and Merrick or Rosso, one of the two, saying of the cute holding award five year old 'this is our insurance if Nikki Webster gets bird flu' LOL.
And it's good to see that we have become Americanised with the five second delay so they can beep out swearing - just was disappointed I was looking away from the screen as Barnesy was being beeped out.
Mix the Aussie stuff in with the overseas quality recording we are buying, apart from Crazy Frog and Schnappi, there is the horror of the Simpsons, Jessica and Ashlee - Ashlee still has a recording contract after mangling the anthem at the Orange Bowl? And I am still querying what Mariah is talking about in her Shake It Off song - being a guy, I have one or two ideas, but surely Mariah would be higher class than talking about that LOL.
Nickelback may have changed one chord in their Photograph song, but even being the biggest Canadian band of the last twenty years or so doesn't mean that that you don't grow old fast - when's Shania releasing her next album LOL. And did I really see a remix from Mylo remixing not only the music, but the actual video from the '80s as well? Miami Sound Machine was Gloria Estefan before she was solo wasn't it?
Whiney Robbie Williams, dead Tupac still singing, Fiddy Cent, Akon and Bow Wow still singing about picking up girls, Sugababes doing the foreign shouty girl power about sex song, Hilary Duff doing the chaste girl power thing (she still isn't 18, is she?), Daniel Powter singing about bad days.
Oh, now that's just wrong, Madonna dancing in front of a mirror with only a leotard, no leggings - not in the top fifty, but in the probable hits section they have afterwards. Hmm, a bit of Run DMC's remix of It's Like That, and break dancing in the subway, and the beatbox with lights in front of the speakers. Now Her Madonnaness is humping said beatbox, without leggings again. She was singing in Live 8, wasn't she? Back to the eighties indeed LOL.
Just to put a positive on all this, there are some songs in the current charts that I do like - Kanye West's Gold Digger, Pussycat Dolls Don't Cha, Pon De Replay by Rihanna, Sunshine by Ricki Lee (that one only for the music of course), Don't Lie by Black Eyed Peas, Foxtrot etc by Bloodhound Gang, yes I do have lack of taste in some regards LOL, but it's just a fun one, aforementioned Catch My Disease by Ben Lee and maybe a couple others, in the 40 to 50 range LOL...
More soon no doubt
