A Year Is A Long Time In Politics

This time last year, give or take a couple of days, George W Bush had won the US presidential election. Katrina was just a twinkle in the mid-Atlantic weather system's eye, 906 US soldiers that have died in Iraq since were still alive, and journalists were refusing Fitzgerald Plamegate subpoenas on First Amendment grounds.

Of course, any potential President Kerry would still have troops in Iraq, and Katrina would still have hit, and probably have as many issues with an obstructionist Republican Congress as Clinton did, but let us dream for a second. Maybe Kerry wouldn't have done a flyover of New Orleans to survey the damage, disaster tourism style. Harriet Meiers would not have happened. The Pentagon could have been back in the Geneva Convention fold, if not the CIA.

No, it's dangerous to let your imagination go nuts like that, at least not for a Kerry presidency - instead, let's just think if Colin Powell's wife had not said it's either me or a presidential campaign back during the 2000 campaign. Hmmph.

If a year is a long time in politics, just think how long it is until the midterm elections. The Republicans may well be popular again. Especially if they do a rally around the flag election like they did in 2002.

Or, maybe possibly we may have a Watergate presidency again, Bush is sure doing a good job of it so far, the Administration digging their heels in and, apart from the Scooter Libby thing, refusing to acknowledge the Big Plan is off target. 60% negative ratings in the latest polls can't be wrong LOL.
