Had the work Christmas party last night, but will write something about it either later today or tomorrow - get my thoughts in order or something like that. So doing my usual Saturday morning routine of lazily websurfing while hearing the Australian Top 50 on Rage in the background.
Interesting statistic of the morning - it is estimated that only 17% of Californians can afford to buy a new house. Apparently to buy a house you need a household income of $71,000 - whereas the average income is forty thousand dollars - annualised of course. And that is just averages, in the 'popular' housing markets, like California, Florida or New York, it is even worse. And this report is from August - the wonder of the internet, you can find interesting stories from a seeming epoch ago :)
This is a good obituary for George Best, who died in London yesterday, aged 59. As good as Pele apparently, although my generation knows him more as the 'recovering alcoholic and former football star'. Back in the Glory Days of English football, before it was expected that Manchester United would always get to Europe LOL.
Black Friday. You would think it would be a bad connotation or something, but that is what they call the Friday after Thanksgiving in the US, because that is apparently when retailers start making money for the year, out of the red into the black as it were. The retailers entice the crowds in by doing huge discounts and specials before midday or until they sell out.
'In Atlanta, Mesha Mullen, a 23-year-old librarian, recruited six family members to get in line extra early outside Target, Best Buy and Wal-Mart. But the plan hit a snag: her sister-in-law did not arrive at her designated position until 4 a.m., leaving her No. 300 outside Wal-Mart and unlikely to find any $398 laptops left inside.
"We're all pretty mad about that," Ms. Mullen said.'
Yeah, I would be mad as well - imagine, having to pay retail price for something. Now if only you got mad about Hurricane Katrina or Iraq or something grrr LOL.
