Anyone For String Theory?

On the box at the moment is SBS and The Theory of Everything - trying to explain stuff that even confused Einstein... but it is well edited and tries to be accessible - it is better than repeats of Friends and Malcolm in the Middle, and although the main girl is cute on Summerland, not enough to watch a cross of Seventh Heaven and Dawson's Creek LOL... and South Park is on in 20 minutes anyways :)

Maureen Dowd of the NYT doesn't like Xmas LOL. And her column about Thanksgiving was pretty entertaining as well LOL, red state blue state in the same family - hey, wasn't that how the Civil War started, families tearing apart as well - well, at least, that is the impression given 140 years later...

And here is a good one about how the US right wing is bashing the United Nations at the moment. As I read from Kofi Annan sometime, it might be broken, it might be unwieldy, but can you really imagine the world without it? Can we really go back to the days of 'Great Power Relations' that were before WW1? I read a comic once, in the Judge Dredd side of British comics, where the UN was attacked in New York and the Statue of Liberty blown up. Ten years before 9/11, and so much fantasy at that stage... but I digress - if the UN and Hollywood didn't exist, conservative America would still find something to bitch about LOL.

Warning - explicit sexual content ahead - but take out the sexual references from this blog entry, and it is almost haunting in how she is missing the ex, poetic even. Made me think of my ex - and more the non sexual stuff... watching TV, having dinner, all that sort of stuff... oh canadaaaaaaaa our home and native laaaaand etc etc - damn I miss that country. Don't tell V, will ya?

The US Consulate in Jeddah in Saudi is being attacked, in breaking news. At least four local security guards dead and maybe eighteen staff taken hostage. The Saudis are counter attacking the compound - they don't do things by halves in that country, negotiation what's that LOL. Hope the loss of life is as minimal as possible.

Here is a good article about how on earth U2 stay on top of the pile, comparing their last FOUR albums to the White Album, ie, the Beatle's disintegration album. I mean, I saw their latest video on TV and I think it is on the iPod ad as well, and when I first saw it I was like, are they STILL going LOL. Are they still any good is the question that has to be asked, but the last album I got of theirs was Zooropa...

The latest from Iraq - seventy dead over the last three days. As this editorial says, 'The grim routine of repeated violence may have a numbing effect when viewed from afar, but that is not so for those on the receiving end.' Last month was the worst fatality total for American troops as well, and another sixteen dead already this month... mmm, and on the world news on TV is showing F16s taking off from aircraft carriers in the Gulf - god help the US if another medium sized war breaks out, or another 9/11 happens - 150,000 troops due in Iraq next month, that is more than started the invasion last March. Should be a good doco on tomorrow night, about this one being Rummy's war - bad stuff happens indeed...

Geez, I must be getting homesick - an article about Auckland's traffic problems has an effect on me. Mmm, Victoria Park motorway, spaghetti junction, and I don't like Auckland - what is going on LOL. Oh, and the actual traffic article is here - the other one was about Eden Park - LOL Carisbrook is more impressive guys... was in Dunedin for a day, the drive to the airport and back the only time out of working, and I loved the look of it...

Talking of homesick, there is a Missy Higgins (Aussie girl singer) song out at the moment, about break ups and such, called Ten Days - the chorus contains the line 'You're still the only one that feels like home...' yeah yeah, I'm not fully over her, how did you guess. Which is part of the reason I am so tip toey around V... I guess I don't trust myself not be a bastard or something, how on EARTH am I going to get that self mistrust out of my system. The self hatred is away in a box for now, but the self mistrust isn't...

Chopper is on TV now - good movie, in my opinion, Eric Bana's break out role - but boy does it make Melbourne look like a hole LOL. The thing is, he is a real person, who has written a shit load of books, and guess who the media go to for comment with the current gang wars going on in Victoria? Mark the Chop Chop Read of course... he does have definite issues though...

Two good US military articles to finish up with tonight I think - Pat Tillman, the former pro footballer who signed up as a private after September 11, got killed earlier in the year by friendly fire in Afghanistan. But the brass sat on that fact for months, while they gave him the Jessica Lynch treatment - ie, making a hero out of him. Yes, he was brave, yes, he was patriotic, but he wasn't a leader, at least on the battlefield where he got killed...

And in the vein of that platoon that defied their officers and wouldn't go on the suicide transport mission, eight soldiers in the field have sought legal advice and are suing the military over the stop loss policy. Apparently has already happened back in the States, but is the first time soldiers in the field have taken the Pentagon to court.

That should be enough for the night :)
