All Quiet On The Aussie Front

Hmm, the polls in the marginal seats in the UK election are looking a lot more interesting than the national polls. The Tories could bleed Labour quite well (I'm one of those poke Blair in the eye people if I were a British voter - historically I support the Tories in the British sense of the word, but they still haven't quite got their act together since John Major - Michael Howard as PM, no I can't really see it). Not quite a nail biter yet, but hmm we got a hung Parliament in the Canadian election and that was almost as insipid as this one has been :)

The Italian response to the shooting of their secret service agent at a US checkpoint in Iraq came out today. Basically shreds the US report to bits, hmm how on earth can Berlusconi keep on top of public opinion in Italy? The worst aspect to what looks like happened is that the troops who did the shooting muddied the forensic evidence after it became clear there would be a shitload of shit hitting the fan about the whole thing.

An Australian has been taken hostage in Iraq now, not sure how much coverage that has had around the rest of the world. Although the Aussie government is taking a hard line of no talks with the hostage takers, no ransoms, and the Defence Minister here always looks like he is smiling when giving answers - no, not a Bush or Rumsfeld smirk, but still, it is disconcerting. But there has been an emergency task force team sent over to talk to tribal and religious leaders - just hope they have more luck with the Italians if when they get the guy out...

Hasn't really gotten 'water cooler' conversation coverage over here yet, maybe partly because the guy has been living in California for years, but maybe also because of a feeling that Iraq is a far away land and that problems for Australians only happen closer to home, Bali, Aceh etc. Was rather disconcerting this morning listening to the news, hostage in Iraq, oh but CRISIS talks in Canberra over Howard and Costello butting egos again about if when there will ever be a leadership change in the country. Hmmph.

Oh, and on the trifecta for the Iraq stories, Pvt Lynndie England, who was the doofus that allowed herself to be photographed at Abu Ghraib abusing prisoners, pleaded guilty to seven counts at a court martial yesterday. By pleading guilty it appears that she plea bargained her way out of an extra eight years in prison and may only serve three. Of course, anyone higher up than the commanding officer of that particular reservist brigade didn't know of anything and will not be court martialled or impeached or anything - another hmmph result.

Propinquity - I like that word a lot. Common plot device in those dragon, elves and magic fantasy type books. Get a young boy and a young girl on a quest somewhere and no doubt somewhere along the line they will realise they fancy each other - see David Eddings, Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks - no Sam and Frodo LOTR jokes please :)

I raise the word because hmm, eight hours around each other, albeit in a work environment and not actually on a quest anywhere LOL - yeah, I am thinking of SG again, in the context of propinquity. Not a threat to V or anyone else AT ALL, but eh, good value to talk to and nice err 'background' as it were. SG and AS2 were reading Cosmo in between the customer calls today, and lots of giggling ensued, I took the party line for males that Cosmo is the most evil magazine ever LOL, how would they like it if us guys brought in Penthouse or FHM. Yeah, I thought not :)

I miss LD, she is off in Melbourne visiting family this week. Hmmph. Oh, and that was the other thing that stuck in my mind - I wore my glasses into work yesterday (usually I wear contact lenses) and the image must have stuck in the girls' minds, saying that I looked different, in a positive way, with the glasses on. First time I have ever heard such a positive 'different' about my glasses ever, not just in the sense that they look nice, but hmm sexiness, hotness left unsaid as well perhaps? Hmm, no Pauly, it's a work environment, do NOT do the Hot or Not question there LOL. The pub, hmm I might let you get away with it, but at work itself noooo...

I was outraged watching Stephanie get voted out of Survivor tonight. I THINK we are about four or five days behind the States with our coverage of Survivor, so I don't have that much catching up to do for any North Americans who also watch it. This is going to be one of those series where the personalities are voted out. Now seriously people, what have the three remaining girls on the show actually done apart from bitch a little and form early alliances? God it will be good to see the remaining teammates self destruct - I hope Tom gets it now, but I don't see that happening.

Okies, that's about it for tonight

Later taters
Pauly
